Ariadne auf Naxos, opera by Strauss
After revolutionising the history of opera with Salome and Elektra, Richard Strauss returned to the sixteenth century models of elegance and refinement he so admired, a century marked by intellectual ferment (the Enlightenment philosophers) and emancipation of the artist.
Strauss derived the germ of this dazzling opera full of mise en abime from Molière. It's the story of a composer and his patron (with very few musical concerns), and the composer's opera that combines unique humour and noble comedy…
A masterpiece, but most of all an intellectual and musical pleasure - Ariadne auf Naxos is an unparalleled jewel of the musical world.
The production by Christof Loy relies on different styles ranging from the elegance of the seventeenth century to 1980s grunge style, a choice which highlights the richness of the score.
