Facing The Modern : The portrait in Vienna 1900, exhibition at the National Gallery in London
The art of portraiture in the avant-garde.
From September 2013, the National Gallery invites you to discover an exhibition of portraiture in Vienna in the early twentieth century. Indeed, Facing the Modern: The Portrait in Vienna 1900 explores the stunning paintings of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.
Under the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867 - 1918), the portrait was a bourgeois and imperial tradition, which was then broken down by these innovative avant-garde artists.
Discover these paintings created before 1918, the date which marked the collapse of a powerful Empire and the death of two of these major artists; Klimt and Schiele.
