Big Ben

Watching over the Thames.
Big Ben is one of London's best known and most defining landmarks. A major attraction, the neo-Gothic style clock tower is recognised around the world. But did you know that the name Big Ben refers only to the giant bell which chimes the hours? The clock tower itself stands at 99,98 metres tall and Big Ben is housed within it. The bell is 4.25 metres wide and weighs a staggering 14.5 metric tons. The tower, which dates from 1859, is part of the complex of Westminster Palace, the Houses of Parliament, and the seat of the British government.
